Serving Our Nation

There are many opportunities for involvement in Mission throughout the United States. Listed here are several of the groups that the Mission and Outreach Committee supports as we serve God through serving reaching out to those in our nation:

  • Louisville Seminary Scholarship and Bookends Fund to assist seminary students with expenses
  • Buckhorn Children’s Services – residential home for children and teens, Christian focus
  • Cook College in Arizona – providing support for higher education of Native Americans, Hispanics, and other minorities
  • Habitat for Humanity in SW Ohio – providing monetary and volunteer support to help those without homes build their own

Serving Our World

We support the following Presbyterian Mission Co-workers. When they are stateside we host them during church and conversation afterwards in order to learn more about their work:

  • Josh Heikkila in Ghana, https://www.presbyterianmission.org/ministries/missionconnections/heikkila-joshua/
  • Mark Hare and Jenny Bent in Haiti and the Dominican Republic, https://www.presbyterianmission.org/ministries/missionconnections/hare-mark/
  • Ellen and Al Smith in Russia, https://www.presbyterianmission.org/ministries/missionconnections/smith-alan-and-ellen/
  • We also support Ross and Mary Hunter in Ecuador with Pioneers mission agency,

We maintain ongoing relationships with our sisters churches in Barranquilla, Colombia and Russia (see below). Our members have enjoyed visits there and here with members of these churches, and we support the mission work these churches are involved in.
We make yearly and “as needed” contributions to Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA). This “boots on the ground” group of volunteers responds to disasters anywhere in the world. We regularly gather supplies to make hygiene kids of personal care supplies that PDA delivers to persons in need following disasters.

Our ongoing and exciting Sister Church Relationships connect us with Christians across the globe!

Seventh Presbyterian Church of Barranquilla, Colombia, South America, our sister church

Sharing World Communion Sunday with ColumbiaThe “Colombia Partnership” was started in 1995 when the Presbytery of the Miami Valley and the Presbytery of the North Coast in Colombia formed a partnership covenant. As part of this covenant, Miami Valley churches were paired with churches in Colombia. Our church was paired with the Seventh Presbyterian Church in Barranquilla, Colombia.

The covenant is primarily relational, a commitment to form lasting friendships north and south, to communicate needs and prayer concerns, and to support each other in ministry. We travel back and forth and we learn much from each other!

One way that we work with our sister church is to support the Goel Project, a ministry of the Seventh Church that reaches out to help children in a poor area of Barranquilla.

We’ve also had the joy of forming long-term friendships with some of the Colombian young adults who have lived in the United States. Alexander Steffanel and Carmen Guerrera attended Miami University and both of their sons were born in Oxford. Omar David and Mario Bolivar worked at our Presbytery church camp, Kirkmont, and have both married and settled in the Dayton, Ohio area.

A highlight to our relationship has been when we’ve had the chance to worship with our Seventh Church brothers and sisters. We’ve gone high tech with this, using Skype to share our worship together in real time.

In 2012, Mission and Outreach and OPC sponsored a team of our members to visit our brothers and sisters in Columbia. During that trip our team became aware of several needs, and they pursued ways to help.

Our Oxford Presbyterian Women applied for and received a grant for $100,000 to assist the Seventh Church in its mission work with displaced people living in El Porfin, a very poor area of Barranquilla. It was a dream of the Seventh Church to build a new community center from which they could enhance their already active outreach to women and children. This grant from the national office of Presbyterian Women allowed OPC to assist in making this dream come true, and to work alongside the Seventh Church in their outreach. Additional funds have been raised by our church. To learn more:

First Church of Zlatoust in Chelyabinsk, Russia, a “Twining Relationship”

Since 2005, following reciprocal study trips, the Oxford Presbyterian Church has been developing a “Twinning” relationship with the First Church of Zlatoust, Chelyabinsk, Russia and the Bishop of the Chelyabinsk region. Zlatoust, located 800 miles east of Moscow near Asia, is in the heavy industry region of modern Russia.

Thus far the “Twinning” effort has included congregation education programs, shared worship via telephone, pulpit exchanges, mutual support programs for the orphanages of Zlatoust, exchanges of greetings and current events, support for the Chelyabinsk Institute, and presentations from PC (USA) missionaries.

In 2013, Mission and Outreach and OPC sponsored a team of our members to visit our brothers and sisters in Russia.

This trip resulted in the purchase of a trampoline for a Russian church to be used to entice youth to church activities. This was the churches request and we were happy to work along side them in attracting youth to the church.

Mission and Outreach continues with our annual fall fundraising for shoes for orphans in a Russian orphanage to which OPC members make generous donations.
